Description

Psilocybe Azurescens

Psilocybe Azurescens are golden mushrooms found across the Pacific Northwest. The concentration of the psychoactive biochemicals psilocybin and psilocin is higher here than in any other mushrooms like Psilocybe Cubensis and Psilocybe cyanescens.

Psilocybe Azurescens produce intensely powerful hallucinations and transcendent journeys of great personal impact from minor consumption. It is among the most potent of the tryptamine-bearing mushrooms, containing up to 1.8% psilocybin, 0.5% psilocin, and 0.4% baeocystin by dry weight, averaging to about 1.1% psilocybin and 0.15% psilocin.

The cap of Psilocybe azurescens is 3-10cm across. Its shape is conic to convex but as it grows older, it flattens with a pronounced, nipple-like protrusion called the umbo. The cap surface is smooth, viscous when moist, and is covered by a gelatinous substance called the pellicle.azurescens is ochre to caramel in color but becomes pitted with dark blue or bluish-black ones. Its color also changes based on its moisture. When dry, it fades to light straw color with strong blue bruises when damaged.

It also has a long, silky white stem or stipe which reaches 9 to 20cm in length and 0.3-0.6 in thickness. The base of the stem thickens downwards and is often curved, characterized by coarse, white, aerial tufts of mycelium, often with azure tones.

The mycelium towards the base of the stipe is densely root-like, tenaciously holding the wood chips together.

Psilocybe azurescens may be the strongest psilocybin mushroom out there but it’s also the least palatable because of its extremely bitter taste.

Dried Psilocybe Azurescens

Psilocybe Azurescens, a.k.a. Flying Saucers, Blue Angels, Azzies, or Indigo Psilocybe

The most well known of the Genus Psilocybe is Psilocybe cubensis (Earle) Singer, a tropical/sub-tropical species which often grows in cow dung.  They have a thick stem, a broad brown/yellow cap, and a skirt-like annulus.  P. cubsensis are very easy to cultivate, and publicized most notably by Terrence McKenna and his “5 grams in silent darkness”, something you probably wouldn’t want to do with Psilocybe azurescens!

Psilocybe azurescens are often referred to by a variety of common names: Azzies, Astoriensis, Flying Saucers, Blue Runners, Blue Angels, or Indigo Psilocybe. With their caramel-colored caps, bright white stems, and broad umbo (the “nipple-like” structure in the center of the cap), Azurescens are quite distinctive in appearance, once you “get your eye in.”  To the untrained eye, many Psilocybes can look like any other LBM’s (little brown mushrooms) hiding amongst the undergrowth. The general advice is to know the features of the species you are looking for, but also the ones you are not. Members of the genus Galerina, for example, can be deadly, and many other lookalikes can be poisonous.
